The skies had darkened considerably, even since we’d been sitting on the wall. That was the way of things in the County of Mayo; all the seasons in one day. You were well advised to bring your sunscreen and wellies for the one outing. True to form, large raindrops began to fall, which, in seconds, had become massive, stinging hailstones.

“They’re the size of golf balls!” I shouted over the sudden noise as they hit the water and paths around us.

“Quick, follow me.”

We ran away from the harbour and down several unfamiliar twisting alleyways. I didn’t pay much attention to where I was going, as I was more intent on finding shelter. I ducked behind him, into the open doorway he was offering. Once out of the elements, I shook the hailstones out of my hair and took in my surroundings. Natural stone and wood was my main impression, along with high ceilings and lots of glass.

“What is this place?”

“I live here.”

“Really?”

“You sound surprised.”

I was. I hadn’t given much thought to where Finn lived, but I realized now that I must have imagined some manner of dingy bachelor pad; not this designer ‘space’, all natural light and clever angles. I preferred cosier myself, but still, it was impressive.

“Come on,” said Finn. “I’ll show you around.”
